What are compromise agreements and when are they offered ?

Compromise agreements are offered sometimes offered to employees when their employment is terminated due to redundancy, grievances, ill health or a wish of an employee to not return to work after taking statutory maternity leave.  They are called compromise because literally their purpose is to allow compromise between employer and employee; employers agree to pay a certain sum of money (tax free up to £30,000) or give certain benefits in exchange for the employee’s promise to not pursue any disputes or claims through an employment tribunal.  They are designed to make the pre-empt legal battles and make the parting fair and amicable for the employee.
